ATLANTA,Ga.- Playing in one of their final home matches of the 2013 season, the Spelman Jaguars tennis team honored its four seniors today for their outstanding leadership and dedication to the program. At the conclusion of the season, the Jaguars athletics programs will be taking a hiatus, making Saturdays match particularly emotional.
The Jaguars faced off with the Huntingdon Lady Hawks, who were
able to best Spelman on the court, 6-3.
Fighting hard to start the match with doubles, the duo of senior Lauren Holloway and Kemi Oyewole were able to pull out the victory against the Lady Hawks, 8-5. Strong winds and clear skies made play more difficult for the squad, but the duo was able to take the lead early and pull off Spelman's first victory of the afternoon.
The other two victories for the Jaguars came at No. 3 and No. 5 Singles. Oyewole overcame her opponent Katie Scott in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1. Fellow senior Adamma Ebo also won her match against Arielle Barracca who forfeited before the end of the match, giving Ebo the victory.
Before the match, the athletic department recognized Holloway, Ebo, Adanne Ebo and Alana McKinney for their contributions as not only seniors but members of the Spelman community. Escorted by family and friends, they were greeted with applause and flowers from their head coach Sara Redd and Director of Athletic Germaine McAuley.
Heading into the final week of play before the conference tournament, the Jaguars will face off with Wesleyan on Tuesday April 16. The match will be played on the courts of Morehouse College and will begin at 4 p.m.
