Maryville Women Head to Kentucky for NCAA Tourney

MARYVILLE, Tenn.-The Maryville College Lady Scots will pack their travel gear and head to Crestview Hills, Kentucky to participate in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship this weekend.

The Scots (21-6), winners of their 8th Great South Athletic Conference title, will challenge Illinois Wesleyan in first round action on the campus of Thomas More College. Tournament host Thomas More (24-4) will take on Louisiana College (24-4) in other site action. Action is set to begin on Friday, March 2nd.

Maryville will be making the program’s 18th trip to the NCAA post-season. They are paced by four all-conference standouts. Junior Janell Menard tossed in 13.2 points a game while hitting 49% of her shots from the field. Junior Kiera Payne contributed 10.3 points and six rebounds a game while shooting 48%. Junior post standout Tayler Smith shot over 52% from the field averaging 9.5 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Sophomore perimeter shooter Lauren Burnett tossed in a team-high 50 three-pointers while averaging 8.5 points per game.

Head Coach Darrin Travillian was named the Great South’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.  In only a pair of seasons, Coach Travillian has led the Scots to a 42-11 mark.
