Finlandia Falls in First Ever NCAA Tournament Contest

WHITEWATER, Wisconsin - Finlandia University opened 2013 NCAA D-III Softball Tournament play with a 6-1 loss at top seeded UW-Whitewater Thursday at van Steenderen Field on the campus of UW-Whitewater.

Finlandia got off to a quick start when freshman Kari Jewett (Wausaukee, WI) led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by sophomore Paige Yoho (Negaunee,MI), and then scored on a ground out by freshman Kristen Rose (Covington, VA)) to take a 1-0 lead. Whitewater scored two runs in the bottom of the third when junior Morgan Krisch's two out, two run single put them up 2-1. The Warhawks played small ball in the fourth, adding a run on one hit, aided by a Finlandia error and two fielder's choice plays. UW-W added three more runs in the fifth on a single from designated player Paige Evangelista followed by a home run by Samie Seamon.

The Lions were led at the plate by centerfielder Kristen Rose, going 2 for 3 with a run batted in.  On the mound, junior Alyson Herman, 15-5, went 4.2 innings giving up nine hits and five earned runs, with one walk and no strikeouts. Sophomore Miranda Brewer finished the game for Finlandia without allowing a hit.

Finlandia, now 25-7 will face Carthage College, 30-11, Friday at 10:00 a.m. CST in the double elimination tournament.
