ATLANTA, Ga. - The Great South Athletic Conference announced the spring sports week two Players of the Week on Wednesday morning and student-athletes from Finlandia and Spelman were selected as winners through exclusive voting by the league sports information directors.
Week 2 Softball Player of the Week – freshman outfielder Kristen Rose of Finlandia University
Finlandia University freshman outfielder Kristen Rose (pictured batting) had an outstanding starting weekend for the Lions. Rose started all 7 games for the Lions, in which Finlandia went 7-0 for the weekend. Rose had the following stats at the plate: .444 average (8-for-18) with 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 10 RBI, a 1.111 slugging percentage, and 7 walks. In the field, Rose had 4 put outs, 1 assist, and 0 errors for a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Week 2 Softball Pitcher of the Week – sophomore pitcher of Finlandia University
Finlandia University sophomore pitcher Miranda Brewer of Harrison, Michigan went 2-0 in Finlandia's opening weekend. In 20.2 innings pitched, Brewer had 35 strike outs, a 3.05 ERA and an opponent's batting average of .205 as the Lions got off to a 7-0 start to the season.
Week 2 Women's Tennis Player of the Week – senior Lauren Holloway of Spelman College
Spelman senior Lauren Holloway remains undefeated in singles play for the 2013 season. She beat the #1 seeded player at Oglethorpe in two sets and defeated the #1 seeded player at Salem College this past week. Holloway, playing from the No. 1 singles position in both matches, also won at #1 doubles this past week at Salem to give her a 3-1 record on the week in all matches played.
The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released each Wednesday morning.
