ATLANTA, Ga. - The Great South Athletic Conference announced the softball week one Player and Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday morning and Salem freshman Kiersten Garner earned Player of the Week status while Ellie Groenendyk of Covenant claimed Pitcher of the Week honors through exclusive voting by the league sports information directors.
Week 1 Softball Player of the Week – freshman third baseman Kiersten Garner of Salem College
In six games this past week, Garner posted a batting average of .611 with 3 RBI. She drew 2 walks, smacked 3 doubles and only struck out once during her stellar week en route to claiming Player of the Week honors.
Week 1 Softball Pitcher of the Week – freshman pitcher Ellie Groenendyk of Covenant College
Groenendyk (pictured) has appeared in two of the Lady Scots four games this season and has pitched 5 innings while yielding only 1 earned run. Against Bluefield, Groenendyk started and went two innings giving up one earned run. In a 6-1 loss to Point University, the freshman threw 3 scoreless innings with only 3 hits and a walk given up on her way to winning the first Pitcher of the Week honor of the young season.
The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released each Wednesday morning.
